Next Tuesday, March 15, the Ecological Transition Commission of the Congress of Deputies will receive the lawyer Teresa Vicente, professor of Philosophy of Law at the University of Murcia and main promoter of the Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) that aims to provide Legal Personality to the natural space of the Mar Menor and its basin.
This initiative is based on a study by the Legal Clinic of the University of Murcia. It has the support of the Chair of Human Rights and Rights of Nature, in which Amnesty International and Ecologists in Action participate. It has been based on the experiences that already exist in other countries in America and Oceania, in which rivers or lakes have been given this legal recognition, which aims to serve as a tool for the effective protection of important ecosystems of great ecological value and that They are threatened by the current model of production and consumption.
This initiative aims to ensure that the Mar Menor has a charter of rights that respects its ecological law, and guarantees its legitimate rights to live, to repair damage and to recover. In addition, it will serve to pursue and sanction those people, companies or entities that attack the ecosystem.
In the appearance before the Ecological Transition Commission of the Congress of Deputies, Teresa Vicente will defend the ILP of the Mar Menor and its basin, with the request that it be raised to the Plenary Session of Congress and approved as soon as possible, to be able to put it into effect. practice and make it effective.
Various social and environmental groups that work in the defense of the Mar Menor, and that have collaborated in collecting signatures and promoting the initiative, have called this Tuesday, March 15, at 10:30, a rally to support this ILP in Carrera de San Jerónimo in Madrid, in front of the Congress of Deputies, coinciding with the appearance. This concentration, which is open to whoever wants to support this initiative, will be attended by members of different groups, who will travel to the capital from different municipalities in the Region of Murcia and other parts of the Spanish State.
Both the promoter group and the groups that support the ILP of the Mar Menor trust that the Ecological Transition Commission will vote in favor of presenting the ILP to a vote in the Plenary Session of the Congress of Deputies, where they hope that its approval will be achieved.
